Definitions:An intellectual disability is characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills and originates before the age of 18.
Intellectual functioning—also called intelligence—refers to general mental capacity, such as learning, reasoning, and problem solving Federal Definition: Educators generally use the definition in IDEA, which defines an intellectual disability as: "significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period, that adversely affects a child's educational performance" One criterion used to measure intellectual functioning is an IQ test. Generally, an IQ test score of around 70 or as high as 75 indicates a limitation in intellectual functioning. http://www.aaidd.org/content_100.cfm For prevalence of intellectual disability: a meta-analysis of population-based studies follow the link below http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21236634 Helpful Organizations and resources
